It has happened before, quite a lot, actually. A few years ago, none of them were performed. The year Adele won, I think she's the only who actually performed her whole song, and then a couple other nominees were put into a medley while others were left out. Another year, same thing, I remember one of the nominated artists who wasn't chosen boycotted because of it. I get why they're doing it; they're trying to shorten the show (still won't work), and keep ratings. I'm not sure which is worse, just cutting nominated songs altogether, or including them but getting a bigger star to sing them.

I feel bad for the ones they skip, though.

On the last point about bigger singers - I remember being furious they had Beyonce sing Learn to be Lonely instead of letting Minnie Driver have her moment. She didn't get to sing in the movie nor perform her one nominated movie-related song at the Oscars. It felt so unfair all the way around.

And then they had frigging Antonio Banderas come in another year, because the actual singer of the song wasn't well-known enough here. But yeah, I remember the Beyonce year, and I was annoyed with it in general, she sang everything.

Adele's song won over "Pi's Lullaby" and I would've love seeing Bombay Jayashri perform it. It's a beautiful song.

Better idea - half hour telecast where they read the winners the way they read nominees. No wasted money, no three hour issues, just a done deal.

Nah that’s whack. 2 hours tops would be good.

On one hand, the telecast is always way too long but on the other, this is so disrespectful to the other nominees.

I thought that since there wasn't going to be a host they planned to to fill the space with musical performances?

I remember 2011 where there were only TWO nominees and neither were allowed to perform. And one was the freaking muppets who had been adored and embraced throughout the entire awards season! The academy still didn't want them to perform a two minute song. Madness imo.
