Amma Asante's movie about a biracial girl (played by Amandla) with an aryan mother who falls in love with a Nazi boy (played by the guy who was the oldest kid in Captain Fantastic) was released in theaters last year but it flopped. It was released online yesterday.

look i know nazi's were brainwashed or whatever, and perhaps it makes me an asshole... but i can't have any sympathy for them. i side eye people who do. hard. so no thanks to a love story.

I need to educate myself more on it but is it fair to say they were brainwashed? I'm reading a book on the culture of the south during the civil war and reading about the motivations of people who fought. Most of them didn't own slaves. (Most of the germans weren't the ones in the concentration camps doing the work) but the people of the south believed that whites were a superior race and freeing blacks would be bad for society. They believe in that. Weren't the germans guilty of that same hatred for others?

Nah, they weren't brainwashed. You can't brainwash an entire country. Antisemitism has been rampant in all of Europe for literal centuries - the Holocaust wasn't a weird aberration, it was the culmination of a hundred smaller purges and endless persecution. Jewish people were convenient historical targets for a nation that was absolutely devastated by the idiotic, pointless war that their king started and the aftermath of the punitive measures put in place by the rest of the European powers (who were equally culpable in that war). But none of that actually excuses what happened, everyone made choices and they made morally indefensible ones.

To some extent I guess there's a difference between a person who was an active member of the Nazi party and someone who was just a German during WWII, but honestly I'm not too well read on the social order of Germany during that time period so I can't comment on that more extensively. And in any case it seems like everyone wants to make their stories about For Reals Nazis and, like, can we just
