War reporting is incredibly important. It's one of the big reasons we got a stop to the Vietnam war, when reporters brought back truly horrifying photos that changed public opinion.
In fact, the Pentagon blames reporters for ending the war in Vietnam, and from then on, the US government devoted significant resources to "managing" reporters in their wars (including a fleet of bulldozers to pretty up battle zones after the fact), culminating in the extremely favorable coverage of the first gulf war.
War correspondents are heroes. Colvin was a hero among heroes. She and other reporters who brave war zones are risking their lives just for the chance that humanity can make an informed decision about what kind of violence their governments can perpetrate. She deserves to be celebrated and have her story told.
