Tbh, the Weeknd really changed the game a lot more than people give him credit for. The whole slow, moody, lush sounds on the radio are definitely because of the successful of Abel.
His managers did tbh. Just few days ago I had an eyeopenning discussion about his career, that his first 'anonymous' (at the time) mixtape was produced by a pretty famous songwriter, so he was signed from the beginning (probably because he ghostwrote some hooks here and there, allegedly for Drake) so they got him huge critical acclaim and then a pop record with major radio deals. No way any pop radio would play something like The Hills without payola. Basically, a better executed version of Lana Del Rey's marketing plan.
