If you're knitting socks, 6 inch will probably be easier to deal with. 8 inch is better for knitting larger-circumference things in the round (e.g. hats, cowls). I prefer to use two long circular needles, but everyone has a different favorite method for socks!

If you don't have it already, I heartily recommend Getting Started Knitting Socks by Ann Budd. I got it for my sister (and forgot to give it to her at Xmas *cough*) and I wish I'd had it when I had first embarked on sock-making.

Awesome! thanks! 6 inch it is, or perhaps both... That's the very same sock book that Marnie recommended! Knitpicks doesn't seem to have it, oh well. I will just have to get it from Amazon, and then i suppose get free shipping I'll have to add on a couple more books. :)

I found it on Knitpicks this morning... hopefully it'll still be in stock?

ooh thanks for the tip. I think I want to not go with bamboo but rather the nickel whatever, is there a reason why I shouldn't? But I may not get the kit, since my mom gave me some dpn's, I think there's only one that's the size that would be in the kit...
