I heard that he was actually not filming, but just swimming when it happened, and it was a freak accident... wouldn't that be ironic.

totally a freak accident - and really quite sad. He devoted his life to informing people about the wildlife of austrailia (and the universal problem of "introduced species") - Animal Planet will never be the same

I read in that article that they where filming...and how bad ass is this, he pulled the barb out before he died. I feel so sad for his family though, his kids are so young. :(

The news hit the Aussie troops particularly hard. Though all were not fans of Mr. Erwin (some were downright hostile to him) , they all seem to have felt the loss a bit.
