A Definitional Note

Jun 27, 2007 15:23

Innateness ≡ Canalization. So the claim that something isn't biologically innate is eqivalent to the claim that an organism's developmental program doesn't canalize it on that trait. This is very plausible with accent, and not at all plausible with language acquisition. Also, to suggest that something is psychologically innate is not the same as suggesting that there's a mental module for it: There is no mental module for fast reaction time but it could well be highly innate.

I make this note merely because I've seen way too much confusion on this point.
