Shakespeare in Love won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1998, and six others - Best Actress (Gwyneth Paltrow), Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench, who is only on screen for 8 minutes), Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. The Hugo that year went to The Truman Show.

This is one of the very few Academy Award Best Picture films that I'd count among my own favorite movies. It is made with such wit, zest, and intelligence as to be totally enjoyable.

I feel like this is an underrated movie, which isn't something you often say about Oscar winners. It takes its time getting going but the payoffs in the last third are deeply satisfying. Tom Stoppard needs a lot of the credit -- yes, the performances are great, but the underlying intelligence of the writing is what really lifts this one.

Yes, I agree. As I said, it's one of the lowest rated Oscar winners for its year in IMDB; and I don't really see why!

I am one of the people who just doesn't get it. I like large chunks of it, I think I'm just unconvinced by the central romance. I don't even like Saving Private Ryan (enforced watching in English class did help my ability to analyse films, but ...). Of the big three, I would have given the Oscar to Elizabeth, no matter what liberties it took.
