Personally, I think this does fine as a oneshot. The arc is good: start of date to end of date, John not knowing wine to learning about it, and Mycroft moving from insecure to more secure.

I loved the descriptive bits, although I'm not entirely sure John would get into it quite so fast (if anything, the progression of that seems to go backwards. He starts very detailed in his internal observations but then starts second-guessing, and gets distracted). Honestly, I don't know much about wine either, so this fic left me wanting more of Mycroft's education. I much prefer one-on-one teaching. :)

I also really enjoyed the sexual tension here. Everything is heightened: the nervousness that a date brings on, the sensuous nature of tasting wine, the looks the two keep giving each other. It's all good, and I don't feel the overwhelming urge to see it completed with some smut.

This was lovely and I do hope you write more of it. I had several oz of Bailey's while reading and Inthink it made reading slash with the tasting of alcoholic beverages even better.
