I had two main motivations for starting this WIP. One: I wanted to try a historical AU, and I happened to be watching a terrible Western film at the time. Two: I really want John to say "tarnation." In context. The problem I'm having is that I'm actually not that up on my 19th century American history (I'm a Medievalist at heart). What war was John

I could tell, oddly enough, that you aren't familiar with this time period. Some of it just didn't ring true to me. It was mostly in setting the stage, where is he? What's the area like? And also with his treatment of Gladstone. I would've liked more detail about her. If horses are the cars of that age, he'd be proud of her, or ashamed of her, the same way a man today would know the details of his ride. And also, as a side note, more on why he would want to remove her saddle. I may not be a horse expert, but I do know that wiping her down after a hard ride is good horsemanship
