[4] My inmate is a stubborn old man.

Beatty! Congratulations! You've got yourself a job on Custodial Duty starting tomorrow morning. Enjoy!

[Warden Filter]If Beatty asks for anything, please don't give it to him. He doesn't take me seriously as his warden, so I want everything to go through me. I wouldn't put it past him to try to do whatever he can to avoid dealing with me, ( Read more... )

Just don't let him scare you, kiddo. If all else fails, knock him down a few pegs and keep him there. He'll come around or else.

Alternately, I can put a boot in his ass for you. I'm already Wardening two Inmates right now- not by choice, I might add.

[Warden Filter] I just made some kind of squeaky noise that scared my cat. <3 notarrowette March 15 2010, 03:06:48 UTC
So far he's pissing me off more than scaring me. He called me insane. I'm okay with acting a little insane if I have to. And--I might, to make him listen. We'll see.

But thank you. If worse comes to worse, I may take you up on that. You've got those phenomenal cosmic powers at your disposal that must come in awfully handy.

How's that working out for you, anyway?

I hear they do that. Just keep a stiff upper lip and don't let 'em see you sweat.

No problem. I've been kicking ass all week, might as well make it my job. Maybe I'll put up an ad: "Will Beat Your Inmates For You Until Morale Improves."

The phenomenally cosmic powers, in general? Or just when it comes to my inmate? Because the answer's not bad in either case. Could do without the floods though.

I'm working on it, trust me. I think I'm going to have to work hard to out-stubborn the old bastard.

Haha, normally I'd say you'd be doing a lot of business but things seem incredibly... cheerful lately.

Well, I meant the double-inmate thing, but now that you mention it... Though we haven't had one of those for a while. ...I need to go knock on wood now.

...Uh. No. I don't think that would--I think I'll try something else, thanks.

Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Cissie, I'm 18 and I'm not a child. Contrary to what my age implies and what my inmate may think. I'm just not a fan of corporal punishment period and the man is three times my age.

Unfortunately, Cissie, that is not going to happen.

Oh, it is. You just don't know it yet.

I will not do it, girl.

That is the end.

It's the beginning.

I'll be by to pick you up for your shift in the morning. Get a good night's rest.

Stubborn inmates. Oh god, where to begin.

Actually, I should probably introduce myself first-I'm Una Persson. My inmate is O'Brien, who I gather has become rather chummy with your Mr Beatty.

And "stubborn" barely begins to cover O'Brien.

Oh, hello! I'm Cissie. And--yes. I met O'Brien on the deck the other day. He's certainly... something. I imagine you have your hands full with him.

Private mrs_persson March 16 2010, 19:52:52 UTC
Ah, of course. You caught their impromptu campfire, yes?

He's a trial, I won't deny it. The first month here, he was convinced that we were all figments of his imagination, summoned up by his subconscious as a sort of test of his own orthodoxy. Then he went on to accepting the reality of the situation, but at that point he simply decided we were all hatefully insane.

Still, progress is progress, I suppose.

The best piece of advice anyone ever gave me, I'll pass on to you-as tempting as it is to go head-to-head with a totalitarian ideology, don't. It just reinforces his own worldview and makes it easier to dismiss you. Actually trying to listen to and engage with O'Brien gives me enormous headaches, but at least he's slightly less overtly hostile to me than at first.

I did indeed. They said there was no fire because there was no book and therefore nothing to burn, or some other kind of BS. Then dismissed me as insane, so I suppose it could have been worse. At least insane is a step up from imaginary, like you said.

That is good advice, thank you. I appreciate it.

As the librarian I've already taken it upon myself to make it clear to him that I won't tolerate any book burning, to which he behaved as if my suspicions were unwarranted and rude.

Suffice to say I'll be keeping my own eye on him if he comes around.

Ugh, yes. He's given me that attitude as well--and thanks to O'Brien, he's come to adopt the idea that books just don't exist and he can't burn something that doesn't exist. And even standing in front of a pile of ashes, they claim there was no fire because there was no book and so they see no ashes--it's enough to drive you mad.

But thank you. I'll do my best to keep him far from it, though I don't really think he'll go there unless it's exactly for the reasons we don't want.

I'm Cissie, by the way. I don't think we've met.

I tend to ignore that sort of thing from O'Brien, so I encourage you to do the same with Beatty.

I'm sure you'll do your best, but we can't be entirely responsible for our inmates. Aziraphale; pleasure to meet you, Cissie.

I'll do my best. At this point, he thinks I'm an insane little girl, but I don't think I mind being underestimated. Leaves room to surprise him.

Thank you. It's very nice to meet you, too.
