I am Not Just a Nerd - I am the Queen of Super-Nerds

Aug 20, 2010 00:07

I attend school in an adult education program with people over the age of 25 who have already been in the work force for quite a while. Most of these students are accomplished professionals who are attempting to make themselves more competitive in their fields, or move up in their organizations. I'm younger than many of them, but I've managed to ( Read more... )

school, rant, atlab, procrastination, nerd

*laugh* Don't worry, I was outed recently at work (as if the display of Rurouni Kenshin characters above the desk wasn't a clue...)

We were at the budget meeting when they started talking about local people who wear bowties.

"Such and such mayor wears one," says the editor across from me.

"Yeah," I agreed, "and the Doctor."

Dead silence.

"Doctor ... Doctor Who?"

They immediately changed the topic. -_-

Lol - The topic change would have been bad in a live conversation. Doctor Who's not that bad though! (I need to see this series at some point) At least it's live-action. ^^;

I was kind of hoping my post would fly under the radar since we're not required to reply to everyone in forum discussions. Unfortunately, it got replies, which got replies, which made it draw attention because it was long. *sigh*

Revel in your nerdiness, you make life more interesting and let other nerds know it's okay to also be nerdy. ^_- I can relate though, I pretty much did the same when in university, hiding my nerdiness because it's not something guys find desirable in girls. (Their loss!) My cover got blown when a classmate who sat behind me got to class early and spied my desktop on my laptop: the screen shot from the end of Slayers Next when Zelgadis makes Amelia blush. As it turns out, this classmate had actually seen Slayers, so after my initial freak out at having my cover blown, it was so nice to know that someone else at that school was more like me. I regret it happened so late in the semester though, as I never saw her again ( ... )

Normally, I'm very proud of my nerdisms. I even used to joke with my coworkers that I was going to get a pair of black, thick-rimmed glasses with white tape on the nose and wear them during the day. The nasally voice and the occasional snort is already there (hence the origination of my Internet alias), so the glasses would only complete an image I already knew I had.

Your experience with the girl who recognized Slayers is the reason I keep my Gourry chain, bookbag and Coco bracelet. I keep hoping to run across someone in my school who will get at least one of the references. I miss my nerd buddies who all moved to the east coast!

Lol - I love seeing the expression on people's faces when I blind type, especially if I'm talking about something else while I'm doing it. Unfortunately, 9 times out of 10, it's not as impressive when I check what I actually typed. X)

I try to hide my nerdiness, but if you talk for me longer than five minutes, it'll come out. Especially with Avatar. XDD

LOL

ATLAB is a bad one for me right now too... but I didn't think it would get this bad. X) I think I might still have a red spot on my forehead from when I facepalmed after realizing what I had done the next day.

Between my TTSw/COB shirt, my "Legally Prohibited" shirt, and my IWCoco bracelet, I thought for sure Conan would be my undoing in this class, but he wasn't.

Avatar will be my undoing. When the husband and I went to Florida this spring, we spent the majority of the trip quoting appropriate episodes. Every time we went to the beach, I'd quote parts of The Beach. When we went to a park and road the air boat around the (mostly) swamp, I quoted parts of The Swamp. I'd forget other people were there. My FIL gave me odd looks if we'd quote when he was around.

Aww - At least you have your husband to nerd-out with. ^^

When I went to a family bar-b-que last weekend, my mom offered me some iced tea she had made with her garden-grown mint. I asked her if it was delectable tea or deadly poison. She didn't seem to appreciate it that much. X)

That's a good point. I used the portion of the episode where they added mercaptan (?) to the gas to make it detectable. It did fit the prompt rather well. I was just a little surprised I had opted to go that direction when I checked it the next day.

And yeah, I really think we wear a crown or a nerd-halo or something! Maybe I should get a "nerd" tattoo on my forehead and eliminate any chance of confusion. ^^

You're not alone, I tried to hide my nerdiness while I went back to school (same reasons as you), but I'm sure some of it must have come through. And when I worked at the daycare, just about everyone knew I was a Disney geek.

Look on the bright side, there are more nerdy choices you could have picked liked Slayers which isn't as known. At least Avatar is fairly known by the general public. Who knows, maybe the lady who says she'll check it out is actually a nerd herself. ^_~

But being a Disney geek seems like it would be a major asset at a daycare! At least if they showed movies, you'd probably be more tolerant to repeated run-throughs.
