Matt?

So, make fun of me if you will, but I really like Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" album and I know it's heavily influenced by older groups but I don't know where to look for such stuff. Matt, help me out? Or anybody else... give me artists and if you can, specific albums that defined this style of music. Thanks! Preferably female artists... I'm ( Read more... )

I think Ella and Billie Holiday are much more jazz and less pop than Amy Winehouse. I think what might hit the spot for you is some classic '60s girl pop - the Shangri-Las, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, the Exciters, the Cookies, Leslie Gore, the Shirelles, stuff like that. Winehouse's sound is just that fused with a healthy dose of Motown and a little rock swagger in her voice. I can send you a pretty good sampling of girl pop if you're interested.

I got a good dose of Ella and Billie yesterday and I like their stuff but I was thinking the same. I don't have pando anymore (it's automatic updates were messing up my comp) so if you can g-mail the files regularly that'd be great, thanks.

I think Amy was mostly influenced by Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington (her voice, at least). I honestly absolutely love Back to Black, I think it's just a shame Amy Winehouse is such a substance-addicted lunatic. Have you ever seen footage from some of her concerts? She's so drunk/stoned she can't even carry a tune, she's too busy stumbling and mumbling and throwing shit at/threatening the audience. It is really a shame. It makes me lose respect for her, between the shit she pulls at concerts that people pay money to see and how she posts videos of her smoking crack on You Tube (LoL), but I still really do love her music ( ... )

I'm familiar with Lily Allen, she did a hook for Common's new album so I checked her out and I liked it a bit. Yeah, I don't like Amy Winehouse the persona but the singer (and I think mostly her background music) I really like. I'll check out the others you said, thanks a lot soon-to-be-out-of-jersey Tiff!

ok so While I can see people drawing "similarities" between amy and ella/billie, they are very different. I think the main similairty is a unique voice. Like the first commenter said, theyre alot more jazzy and what Amy does on her first album (frank, also really good by the way) is more like that. Back to black is very 60s girl group, doo wop, motown inspired. along with the groups the first guy mentioned try the crystals, little eva, and you might even see similarities with Julie london, though shes a little slower...more like me and mr. jones or some unholy war. If youre gonna go the jazzy route the closest comparison to amy could be etta james.(rather than ella or billie who are in my opinion superior)or even dusty springfield ( ... )
