Guide: Escaping Ad Server Targeting

Apr 11, 2006 21:25

This guide tells you what type of data is gathered when viewing a page that serves ads and how to minimize the amount of data that is collected then.

This guide has been moved to No LJ Ads Wiki. See the Escaping Ad Server Targeting guide to see an up-to-date guide.

If you have any question of new information to provide, please comment either here ( Read more... )

do you mean the following instead?

"We only send country. Zip code, state, city, and time zone are not currently being used."

the punctuation used made the statement confusing.

Sticky:
This post needs to be updated to include this.

I think an ad-targetting tag would be good too. In fact would it be okay to add more explicit tags to the the guides like prodding modules, switching back to free, etc to make things easier to find?

Agreed; the tags need to be redone so that they make more sense. Make sure to give me any other tag ideas you know!

Most of our documentation is due for a rehaul. I should get my computer back fixed within a few days. (Hopehopehope.)

For later:

Reference.

Notable Interests: now 150 instead of 10.

Will need to be investigated: "Changes to the ad settings pages (prompts for optional demographic information)" from the latest Code Push.

Agreed--it seems to automatically populate with the information from your profile, so does that mean they're connected?

I think that's good stuff--helps people know some of the information that will be used in ad targetting.

Latest development:

For ads between entries, target the text of the entry above the ad if it's public.
Otherwise, target the text of the first public entry.

You're a sharp one!

I've changed the wiki article guide on it to reflect that info. I need to go around and get all the guides translated and then link all of these posts to those guides! I've been making progress on that, anyway. Easier to change the wiki than these posts, and then we get revision history, too.

We should make wiki articles on "Keeping an eye in Six Apart" and "Keeping an eye on LJ Advertising". Over the past few months, we've developed these routine strategies to keep abreast of developments, and we should document them to make it easier for anyone who wanted to to do so!

Well I was looking for something else actually, which I didn't find but you know how things go. :)

I saw that. You did a very, very good job. Sorry for nor being more involved BTW but this is not a good time for me (end of the trimester which means meetings and report cards and all sort of not-fun) and I have other online commitments that have taken a good part of my free time. So, I apologize. Sincerely. I wish I could help you more. And I'll stop now and keep the rest of my frustrations for my journal. ;-)
