Leoben sees her again after nine generations have passed. She is still beautiful, full of fire and love for the world. She recognizes him and looks resigned but unafraid. There is almost relief and affection in her smile, even if it's punctuated by rolling her eyes. She always knew he'd find her on the other side, streams or not.

They speak about prophecy and the future of Earth. It must be minutes, to his ecstacy, before her smile fades. "I'll never forgive you," she says, not with hatred, only calm sincerity. He nods. Never seems such a useless word here.

"I believe you believe that," he answers. This doesn't make her happy.

"Do you think I should?"

Sadness envelopes him for a moment. "No. I understand," he says. "But I think..." She might. It's worth waiting to see. He will always give her time; never is meaningless now. "You forgave your mother and father," he reminds her. "They hurt you before I did, worse than I ( ... )

I reread this so many times today, because it is fantastic, and you are amazing for making such a fabulous treat.

Possibly my favorite line: "I didn't realize you all had a contest going," she mutters.

Thanks so much! I'm glad I was able to do Kara/Leoben justice and keep it ambiguously hopeful without being OOC.
