It's always kind of been in the back of my mind, but lately there are at least a few occasions that I seriously pondered what I might do if I hit an animal with my car and it didn't die but was suffering. I've always thought that I wouldn't have it in me to put the animal out of it's misery and it turns out, I was right ( Read more... )

I wouldn't class it as murder. That would imply premeditation and intent. I don't think this is the case. It is an unfortunate accident. I hope your day picks up.

I hate that feeling. It hit a squirrel several years ago and the poor thing spasm-ed in the middle of the road. I also hit a raccoon a few years ago but when I turned my car around, it was gone. I was afraid to get out of the car because I didn't know if the animal was hurt, where he was and if he would bite. But all these years I have felt bad about both.

That reminds me of this time that I saw this squirrel who'd been half run-over in the middle of the street, using his front legs to pull his squished lower body across the road with all his might. I drove past it, feeling terrible. When I finally mustered up the courage to do a u-turn in order to go back to run it over and put it out of it's misery, it was gone. :(

As you say, at least the opossum wasn't alone in it's final moments.
