Super Mega Batgirl Review the sixteenth

Dec 16, 2010 17:02

Another amazing and striking cover. Beautiful use of shadows, and Steph looks bad-ass (I misspelled that as bat-ass initially EL OH EL)

Page 1: Steph on the run from the coppers! She politely exposits for us.

Page: Steph and Oracle banter, I will never get tired of you. Amend  that dictionary! Also, Nguyen draws such an attractive Babs.

Page 3/4: Oh, ( Read more... )

I think the next one'll be out in the spring. And I'm so glad I've turned someone on to the title, it really needs all the help it can get.

Once again, it was well worth the wait, even if for # 15 this was the longest wait yet.

I also am in favor of Batgirl remaining self-contained, mainly because I'm still mostly divorced from the rest of the DCU. (I want no part of a universe where "Max shot Ted" is still canon.)

Of your poems, I liked Exile the best, and Flesh the least (but if the latter kept you from self-harm I'm all in favor of it). So glad you're happier now than you were when you wrote it.

And if your poetry teacher called your Edgar Allan Poe "novel" outstanding, then I want to read it!

Thanks!
On the poems, Do you mean Elegy? And thanks. May I ask what you didn't like about Flesh Set Free? Is gory imagery not to your taste, or was it something amiss with the writing? I'd like to know for improvement.

Ha, the paper is long, but I'll see if I can post it, or at least message it.

*facepalms at my own stupidity* Yes, Elegy was what I meant. Replying here, I didn't have the title in front of me and all I could remember was that it started with an E.

I mostly found FSF disturbing because I knew you and what you were going through at the time. Not sure how I'd feel about it if I didn't know the author.

In terms of gory imagery, I noticed you strongly featured blood in most of your poems. That's not a bad thing for an individual poem, but it has the potential of getting repititious. If you're going to write more poetry (perhaps publish your own anthology?), I would humbly suggest coming up with other imagery, to give your poems more variety.

And again, I'd love to read what you have to say about Edgar Allan Poe.

Like with #15, while I mostly enjoyed this issue, which was full of Steph awesomeness, it was sadly riddled with plot holes. The frame job on Steph was so sloppily done that even the stupidest cop should have been able to see through it in about an hour.

Page 6: "And it was only then that young Stephanie TRULY realized that gravity would be her enemy". Oh Steph, I adore you. And is that a reference to Steph's battle with gravity in issue 20 of Cass's series?
It has to be. Which is awesome, both for the continuity nod and because it implies that BQM has been reading up on Steph's appearances in Cass's series, which means we might actually get a mention of her soon.

It is nice to see a comic writer who is actually willing to bother to read the back issues and learn about the character they're writing. You'd think that would be a bare minimum requirement for writing a franchise character, but so many writers obviously don't.

Steph dislocated her shoulder, but she's barely even wincing about it.Aw, and that was her good shoulder, too. ( ... )

Francisco doesn't even ask about Steph's arm. What the hell, man?
Seriously! Two nights ago you saw her take off in a rush (right after a guy ran by screaming for help), this morning she's got her arm in a sling. No questions whatsoever? And on a previous occassion, you saw her get her skull grazed by a bullet fighting guys trying to kidnap you. Either he's as self-absorbed and oblivious as Jordana and just friendlier about it, or he's already figured out she's hiding something and is pretending not to notice.

In related news, Jordana is really coming off like a tit, here. I'm not sure why a protest should even be necessary for her grief-for-grades scheme... shouldn't she just complain to a counselor or something? Does Steph really need an asshole "frenemy" on campus? Can't she have actual friends? Whatever happened to that Pad girl Steph was playing table tennis with back in #13? She seemed cool.

Babs is awesome with her magic-clue-machine...You know who should really have one of those? The police department. Then discoveries like ( ... )

I thought for sure the last page splash would reveal that, [...] Nick Gage was [working with the Order of the Scythe]
Likewise. His reaction to Babs' mention of guys in robes last issue implied that he knew more than he was saying.

And now, on re-reading, I find myself wondering: what did "Blink" (the way that was italicized in the dialogue, it's got to be his name) mean when he said "It's like the lady said"? (emphasis his)

Steph really needs some good rogues (some of her old rogues from her Spoiler days returning would be cool too! The Baffler? The Riddler? Scarab? THE CLUEMASTER HELLO)
The Baffler was always kind of a joke, so I don't think he'd add much drama to her opponents. The Riddler's supposedly gone straight these days, but there is still some sort of dropped arc from Lewis's run on Robin involving him... be interesting to see that picked back up. Scarab, with her skills and gear, would make a good threat, even if I hate to acknowledge anything Willingham wrote. Cluemaster... well, since they went and made him alive again ( ... )
