I'm really partial to the theory that cockroaches were once big and vicious enough to be a natural predator of humans, and the instinctive repulsion is still there, whether we want to or not. We get two kinds over here; I can deal with the tiny ones that occasionally crawl out of the woodwork, but the large, flying things? Yuckity yuck. They're completely disgusting.
