At 3:30 this morning Tilson woke me up to go outside. I opened the door and he took off at a dead run, barking. Yep. That wasn't a good sign. And then this incredible nauseous smell, like burning garlic, filled the house. I think it came in through the open window in the office where the cats access the outdoor enclosure

You have my sympathy!
Have you tried putting a cotton ball soaked in your favorite scented oil in a cup and placing that strategically around the house?
We use peppermint as it clears up a lot of bad smells. Because, between kids, cats and old house that sorta leaks, and 9 months of not window opening weather, we've had to some up with something pet & small child safe (not candles).
