For a little while, Ryan had considered joining the baseball team like Buck had suggested, just for something to do, but with games on the same day as football practice, he'd changed his mind. He'd never really seen himself as the team-joining type anyway, but there wasn't a hell of a lot to do on the island. Physical activity was easy enough to ( Read more... )

Lucy was smiling instantly at the sight of Ryan, but his question turned her expression puzzled, nose wrinkling, though the corners of her mouth stayed lifted. "The dinosaurs?" she echoed, half-laughing. "Yeah, I live out near the fence. Sometimes you can see one on the other side, if you get close enough." Pausing, she licked her lower lip. "Gert had her pet dinosaur show up, too. Old Lace. She's still around, if you wanna meet her. Tame and everything." How that worked, she still had no idea, but there was something comforting in the fact that Old Lace had stayed after Gert left. She didn't much want to stay on that subject, though, so she shrugged. "Why?"

Ryan shrugged. "Just curious." He held up the journal for her to see. "Been looking through these and, I don't know, just kinda hard to believe they're out there, not that far off." If Lucy had seen them, though, that was different than being told by Riggins or one of the others. Tim, he could believe was just messing with him. Lucy wouldn't. He squinted at her in the sunlight, turning so he could put his back to it and laying a hand on her arm as he moved. "Or that you, y'know, live with one."

"Yeah, that kind of took a while to get used to," Lucy half-laughed, grinning over at him when he touched her arm. Old Lace might've scared her off, in fact, if she hadn't been so desperate for somewhere to stay that night she came to live with Gert and company. It'd been the right decision at the time; she was sure of that even now, with Gert gone. She just wasn't sure if it was still right. That was an issue to bring up later, though. "What is that, anyway?" She gestured to the journal he was holding with a tilt of her head, teeth pressed to her lip. Most of what she'd picked up about the island had been by word of mouth, with as much as she'd kept to herself for that first month. The circumstances surrounding her arrival had been too overwhelming for her to bother with trying to learn much more than she was told upon showing up, and after that, she hadn't any interest.

"A journal." He held it out toward her before adding, "Uh, not mine. Whoever was here first left a bunch of 'em behind. I just thought there might be something in them about - but, uh, mostly it's science stuff, notes about the island." That in itself was a lead, if a small one. The previous settlers, or some of them, at least, had been trained in this, specifically on the lookout for flora and fauna and things that really weren't Ryan's field at all, which suggested they'd shown up on purpose, unlike everyone else here. If that were the case, they'd known how to leave, too, but their journals, at least the ones he'd looked over so far, didn't so much as hint at how.
