Natalie's parents had already left again, and she was alone in her apartment, apart from Moxy. And since she already felt weird, why not make things more complicated by indulging the urge of calling Sam she'd had for a while now?

She was going with it, even if it maybe wasn't her greatest idea.

When Sam's phone went off, he considered not answering it. Not because it was Natalie but because he was enjoying the quiet. But, he eventually gave in and picked it up.

"Hello," he said quietly.

Seemed like the easiest form of superficial small talk to go for.
