RECS What should we have read? Where do we find it? Have you got a star, or out of ten rating? How many times have you read it? Is it bookmarked? Have you got a favorite for each ship you like?
His knuckles brush along the edge of her cheek, the pressure too light to be a strike, too heavy to be a caress and she bites a little harder into her lip. He's completely unafraid of her - amused by her, all she's lost - and it's goading; she wants to push that smirk off his face by grabbing his head and slamming it into the desk...
...and the only real thing that stops her, the only thing left, is Miles is somewhere - waiting - and if she gives in, if she lets emotion take over there won't be anything for him to rescue.
All this passes through her head in a matter of seconds, so it's with a smile, a hint of a laugh, that she lowers her eyes, "Thank you," in the back of her throat stick the words for making everything so simple.
Somewhere out there, in the rotting corpse of cyberspace, there was a bank account called 'Charlie's University Fund' with exactly $10,041 dollars in it - not counting in 15 years of interest.
They'd known they shouldn't pressure her - all the books told them that - but Rachel had never been to help speculating on what every passing four year old interest meant about Charlie's future - after all, sticking her dolls heads on the wrong bodies could indicate an interest in genetics she'd explore as an adult couldn't it?
The idea that one day Charlie would be a scruffy and bruised soldier, dismantling a rifle with sure, clever hands while Miles ran an approving eye over proceedings, had never been one of Rachel's dreams for her.
