ok, yes, the woman is out of her gourd and I'm glad you're there to whack her in the head with a clue, or watch gleefully as people in official uniforms do it.
On another note, you've inspired me to do something I've been 'thinking' of doing for a long time. I'm starting Vet Tech clasees ans when I'm done I want to work for a shelter or the ASPCA or perhaps the Humane Society. I want to help the animals of people like this crazy woman have a fighting chance. Thank You.
Seriously, Well done you and the nice neighbor lady.
Up near here, there's a TNR program for cats that are too feral to re-home. They trap them humanely; neuter, de-flea and de-parasite them; give them their shots and then release them back in their home area. A volunteer/volunteers then make sure that they have shelter and food (with the consent and hopefully assistance of the property owners). Any kittens who are young enough are re-domesticated and adopted out.
Don't suppose there's anything like that in your neck of the woods?
This is a rather long-term solution to the problem. But if the cats aren't breeding, the colony eventually dies out.
As I've said before, there are multiple programs like that here. If the cats aren't on my property, they can't do anything to help. SHE has to call them. Fat chance of that.
This is only peripherally related to your story, but my local humane society just started a feral cat trap-spay/neuter-release program that's making a huge difference. Perhaps you and/or the neighbors could use the momentum from this experience to try and get a similar program going in your area?

Yeah, but I'd want her reborn as something I wouldn't lift a finger to save. I'd hate to inadvertently rescue a reincarnated asshole.
