Unexpected Solution?

So, it's often too hot in laureth's cube for her comfort. This morning was especially bad; for at least the first five minutes of lunch, all she could do was hold her head from the pain. I've tried all sorts of "super-quiet" fans, and they're all noisier than she'll accept. (It's quiet in her side of Cubeville, because everyone's concentrating, and ( Read more... )

If you have the geekery to use an ATX power supply without the motherboard to turn it on, I might be able to find one or two for you. For that matter, I might even give you the old AT supply that I installed as a secondary in my full tower case that I cut a hole in to fit it, then never did anything with. It's got an integral switch to power it on and off with.

I can tell you not to use the Vantec Tornado, since my tower sounds like a small vacuum cleaner with it running, but I'm not sure on what would be quiet. I'd be looking for larger fans that would move greater volumes of air at lower RPMs. I wish you were near enough to visit Chester's here in Kenosha; they have a ton of 12v DC fans to try out.

I have a couple of hypotheses for the ATX power supply. However, if available and we don't find a better idea, I'd rather use an old AT.

I've got nothing on the fans, but have you looked at the Cool Vest options? There are a few different kinds, and as far as I know they make no noise at all. ;)

Oh yeah; I've been thinking of getting an icevest for driving to work and back so I can avoid using the A/C and fan too. That's a good idea.

Vornado fans are also very very quiet, quieter than most PC fans. They might be worth a shot.

I've nothing of practical worth to offer, but wanted to say that I'm in awe of your solution. How incredibly cool! (Pun intended.)
