i know i made up a one song per artist rule for myself for this meme. screw it! i couldn't choose just one here's five songs from my five favorite bands. my bloody valentine just misses the cut because they're not so hot live as it turns out.
arcade fire - my body is a cage
i love arcade fire but it's hard for me to choose a song that stands out above the others (other than wake up). this performance makes me so very happy, though. every time i watch it, i watch for the specific moment that the guy playing the bass guitar freaks out for just a second before reigning it in.
bon iver - re: stacks
as with all the bands for this day, i have another song from them coming up. but this is another great bon iver song.
iron & wine - upward over the mountain
at one point in my life i wrote completely un-ironically that i didn't believe anyone loved iron & wine more than i did, so it's not necessarily saying much to say that this is 'one of my favorite iron & wine songs'. i can't say it's my favorite (that one's coming in a few days) but it's definitely toward the top of the tier directly below my favorite. and, on a largely unrelated note, i know it probably doesn't make sense, but i like to think of the lines 'mother, remember that night the dog had her pups in the pantry / fleas on their paws, blood on the floor, and you cried 'til the morning' as an admonition instead of a question. take that how you will.
neutral milk hotel - two-headed boy, pt. 2
i've written about this one before, but i think it's great. if i could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, it might be this one. and if i could only listen to one performance of it, this would be it, interrupting baby and all.
joanna newsom - only skin
the first time i heard joanna newsom, it was because my friends wanted to know if i wanted to go see her show that night. i was at work and i didn't really feel like doing anything, but i listened to all the songs that she had on her myspace page at the time. and i hated them all, but i played through them off and on throughout the day. by the time i left work, they had started to grow on me. i almost got off the bus to buy a ticket-i think the show was at the moore-but i was tired and thought i'd stop at home for a nap first. i never ended up making it back downtown and it's seriously one of the biggest regrets of my life. now all her shows sell out immediately and tickets are super expensive. some day...
