I'm just grateful that both my office-mate and I swear copiously and get incandescently furious at stupid shit. :D

Yeah see I'm around a lot more people and I'm trying to ... Keep the language down a bit. Boss3 does not seem to mind at all, at least in private (I swear because he's comfortable swearing in front of me). But in general I'm still getting the feel of the place and people.

A new Christmas carol? That sounds like fascinating work! Why not go with something about Egypt and politics? I mean, Coventry Carol is about the massacre of the innocents, so it's not like old carols avoided violence.

One of my favorite carols was written by a Neo-Pagan in response to an annual carol competition: "Bethlehem Down" by Warlock. The harmonies are just gorgeous, and I like how the text ties the birth gifts to the Crucifixion.

KM is actually cool with the silly sheep idea, so I started knocking out a text appropriate for children to sing (because "awesome dread" is TOTALLY a thing kids should sing!). So if I like what I come up with next, I will hit the adult themes on the next one. I'm holding off in Egypt because I know someone did something similar already and I'm trying to get my hands on it to make sure I don't hew too closely to what it does. They are going to be SO different from one another, which I love.

Yes, Bethlehem Down is amazing! There are so many great old carols that I love. I had The Cherry Tree carol running through my head today in the shower (even though the one we did with the choristers lacks the Joseph sass verse, e.g., let he who got you with child fetch you cherries).

Oy. As a filk lyricist and lapsed-but-sincere churchgoer, I have long struggled myself with the matter of new carols, and this post nudged a whole string of miniature lights out of my backbrain, which I offer for what they may be worth ( ... )
