"You too can have your ten seconds of radio fame!"

San Diego's NPR station, KPBS, has requested that people send in limericks on the subject of public radio. Never one to resist writing limericks or a "do our work for us before our fall membership drive" campaign, I submitted mine today ( Read more... )

*bows* Those are... stunning! I realize you're up against a bunch of fellow NPR listeners, which means the competition will be stiff -- even so, I bet you earn some sort of mention :D Other than being read on the air, what do the winners receive?

To the best of my knowledge, that's all the winners receive. Still, I live in fond hope of being able to read mine on the air, after which I will be contacted by a publisher to read their limerick collections for their on-tape edition, thus catapulting me to stardom in the silly-poetry-on-tape reader's circles. :D

But seriously, I'm glad you enjoyed my limericking! I can't wait to hear the other entries. As you say, NPR listeners are a pretty creative bunch, so I have high hopes.

You are too kind, m'dear! I was really worried last Friday when I tried to write them. It's amazing what a bit of sleep will do for one's rhyming and scanning!

See icon for my reaction.

*applause for you* I'm always in awe of anyone who can write poetry -- I haven't managed anything better than mediocre haiku or dreadful teenangst free verse since I was in elementary school.

I live in envy of your icons!

As evidenced by my prediliction for answering fanfiction challenges, I enjoy writing within narrow constraints, and classical poetry forms (does the limerick count?) are definitely constraining. I shudder to think what I'd produce if you told me to write something free verse, though.

And you must check out Limerick Inferno, where a couple of nuts have translated Dante to Lear. The site requries a password to see the whole thing, but if you click on the bottom page, you can see a few sample stanzas. Too funny!

limericks got me through many a staff meeting glasswater October 3 2006, 06:32:55 UTC
so at sarah's wedding we couldn't clink our glasses to get them to kiss; instead they wanted haikus. i humbly submit our table's two (from the mind of yours truly). you may find the second set appropos:

go northwestern go
you are now our puppets
kiss right now you fools

-and-

we don't play by rules
a limerick is coming
you ready for this?

the day that she went for a run
he knew s.t. was the one
her family's all pastors
and she's now the master
there's kissing now to be done!

love.

*applauds enthusiastically*

Bravo! Bravo! I particularly like the third line! I cracked up!

Here's my own humble offering in honor of your bravery and skills!

Since the finger foods discouraged mooching,
And the toasts enforced fermez le bouche-ing,
Your transcendent haiku
Helped the couple debut
With an instant commencement of smooching!

Much love and smooches to you,

LibRT
