Titanic Revisted: Cal was the injured party

Mar 21, 2013 00:37

So my husband recently bought me "Titanic" on Blueray (which looks fabulous) and I've been watching it nearly every other day. And while I still love it, I gotta say after closer inspection, Rose as a person is a bit of a douche.( ... )

It's funny how much ones opinion of a movie can change with a bit of new perspective. I too was OBSESSED with this movie in high school and college. My roommate used to get pissed at me because I'd watch it like every weekend, in fact. But yeah, Rose was a spoiled brat. I kinda want to slap her now. I do think that a better scriptwriter could have fixed some of those plot holes, but the real star of the movie is the visual effects. So yeah, good movie with lots of room for improvement.

ya know, I actually think James Cameron preformed miracles in making Rose seem like the noble heroine of the story. He sculpts the story so that all of Rose's actions seem innocent and righteous. And he was smart enough to realize that a modern audience would root for Rose's selfish sensibilities at first glance. I mean, at 18 I cheered when she spit in Cal's face. Now I'm apalled at the unnecessary action. The shot of her pictures at the end of the story seemed a poetic testament to the life of freedom she lived in Jack's memory and now all I can think is why she carries several old pictures of herself whereever she goes, like a modeling portfolio. Seeing the alternate ending convinced me that Cameron knew how unlikeable his leading lady was and moved mountains to change the perception of Rose at first glance :)

I read this with interest. I admit I’ve not seen Titanic since I saw it at the cinema when it was first released, but I didn’t feel the big love story everyone was raving about when I watched it, and reading this, I think you’ve nailed why it left me cold. Seriously, I nodded so much whilst reading, I must have looked like a nodding dog in the back of a car ( ... )

Yes, I'm fascinated to find that all of Rose's modern sensibilities that had me rooting for her so many years ago, are now what I find so lacking in her character. Which is why I think Cameron is nearly genius. He knew a modern audience would villianise a man who controlled and hit his woman no matter the reason. And he sets up the rich as the bad guys anyway with little regard to how natural the class system was in those days. So Cal, Rose's mother and every other person with money is regarded as an enemy. And the good guys are those who are nice to either Jack or third class passengers in general ( ... )

This is the fcking greatest. Hilarious AND true! I was only, what, 8 or 9? when it came out and was all AWWWW at everything romantic and OOOOH at the costumes. I still go OOOH at the costumes but I do find myself head-desking an awful lot as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. (Oh also I loled about the rear entry. So agreed.)

Glad you liked it. Couldn't stop ranting about Rose until I shared my revelation with the world like a wandering prophet :)

ps the rear entry is one of those you're obligated to hand over should your hubby buy you a lexus, a yacht or a fist sized diamond.
