This was truly heartbreaking. Was it based on personal experience? It was extremely well written. The idea of visiting day, while necessary (or something like it), seems so painful, with the children on display, all hoping to be chosen, only to be passed by again and again. Great job!
No this was a fictional piece with some help from my cousin who is a social worker and talked me through the concepts of how it works in a care home. 'Visiting day' isn't a construct. It's not a day where the kids are taken out, but it is a nickname some of the kids she worked with used when prospective parents would visit, or when there was a fundraiser. She said when these days came up some of the kids would spruce themselves up and hope to meet their forever family this idea seemed heartbreaking and led me to think of someone who slipped through the cracks. Who perhaps could have been saved but wasn't. Then this was the result

Oh, dear, this made me cry. Our pastor's sermon this week was on how our choices define us - using the verse from Deuteronomy30:15 -20 Very good piece.
I thought about adoption when I came across the prompt, but I would have never come up with such a wonderful way to convey it. This really worked for me and it was heartbreaking yet beautiful. Well written!
