I am not sure I agree with some of the arguments Kinou makes. The conversations Kakei has with Kayoko-san are usually problematic for me, case in point an earlier one where she admits she is not exactly tolerant of homosexuality -- that she wouldn't know how to deal if her daughter ever fell in love with a woman. Adding to that the exchange above, where Kayoko says she is not 100% happy being married to her husband, but keeps the status quo in interest of practicality. Kakei's perspective on his own status quo is also pretty cold, though I think it's consciously intended to be tempered by what we actually see of him and Kenji. They're pretty happy, they complement and make efforts to understand each-other; they don't have a lot of problems -- especially in light of Kakei's previous boyfriends. (And Kakei could score a fresh catch if he wanted, since he's so good-looking; it's merely an issue of his being such an introverted person that he doesn't experience passionate love. I admire the realism inherent.) It's true that relationships ( ... )

THIS COMMENT: I AGREE WITH IT

When I read Kinou there were several chapters where I was like "wait, what? no..." but I dunno, I think that one made me sadface the most. And I know it's really a pretty realistic situation but the idea still depresses me. I mean, did Kakei and Kenji ever really have a spark? Kenji moved in out of convenience and though they're comfortable with each other they act more like friendly roommates than actual boyfriends. I dunno, man, I feel like I wouldn't be very satisfied with that kind of arrangement, but I'm also young.

Yoshinaga's non-porn works are notorious for these situations. Antique Bakery ultimately also hit a theme of settling. "Love the one you're with" et cetera. Idk though I think it's sweet to have someone to grow old with, and Kenji is all, "I want to grow old together." They plan for their retirement. I guess at the least it's a different take stemming from a base-genre of insta-love?

How appropriate that new chapters of punpun are out!
Asano's stuff always makes me want to top myself in the most cathartic of ways.

(Punpun especially is a favourite of mine because it could be pretentious and shit in the way that so many indie comics are, but it isn't)

I'm reading the new chapters now! Punpun is occasionally frustrating because all the characters are such losers, but I persevere because I can't look away;;; Lol what a JD Salinger type author. And he was so young when he started! Also the mental image I had formed of Inio Asano turned out to be spot on when I saw his photo. Have you read his other works? The one I linked above is terrific; I want to learn storytelling from him.

Ahaha now that you mention it, there is a JD Salinger type vibe to it for sure. Having cut my teeth on stuff like Ware's Jimmy Corrigan has enured me to misogynistic losers in comics especially ngl

Inio Asano is such a fucking hipster lmao, but you're right, his stories have a lot of heart despite his relatively young age. I've read It's a Wonderful World! and liked it, though I haven't read the one you linked yet. Come to think of it I haven't read Solaanin yet either!

(I think this is due to a secret fear that if I read too much of his stuff I'll get sick of his slice of life/coming of age stories orz. I do love them though!)
