He slinks back from open doors, staying in shadow until he’s needed. To hear her voice, to even smell her hair when she’s so very near; he watches when she tends the King, so very closely near.
He stays away from Éomer, knowing him to be too watchful, too filled with distrust but the King’s nephew is often away from court, away from him and his love for the sun who shines so closely that he could touch.
No notice is taken of her distaste, of her drawing away when he comes close. Within his heart, he holds to the promise of her being his wife even if, as yet, she knows it not.
Until that day, when the promise is kept, he listens to her sweet voice and cradles the curl he stole in his room, thinking of that day when she will be his.
