Each development in a child's life is a joy to witness and celebrate. For the parent of an autistic child, this must be doubly so because you know the mountain they have to climb is rockier. I understand how thrilled you are :)
And it is not at all certain that an autistic child can even make that climb. With a normal child, you are happy when he learns his first words, but you never have that doubt in you that this is something he might never achieve. With Tommer, this joy is mingled with much relief. People take the ability to communicate for granted, I'm just glad my son isn't fated to live a lifetime of not being able to express himself or be understood.
