Thursday night I started having laptop problems. It would overheat like crazy in minutes and the little built in fan on the bottom couldn't cool it down fast enough so it shut off by itself

It might be a battery, but it sounds more like the built in fan. You could try checking out Toshiba's site to see if it is a known issue with this brand of laptop.

Thanks for the advice; I'm thinking maybe I'll check out the fan too.

Nope, there is nothing cluttering the built-in fan; that is totally not the problem. I'm thinking it's something internal.
