Meaningless lists are meaningless...but fun!

I knew that Buffy was one of the characters featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly's new issue, which lists the magazine's choices for the 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years, but I did not realize until I opened the magazine that she is #3 on their list, right after Homer Simpson and Harry Potter. I think that's pretty great! Homer ( Read more... )

Buffy's place in the list and Joss' praise had me grinning at my EW yesterday as well (still find it odd that EW now comes on Thursdays instead of Fridays). I love reading love for all the hard work SMG put into Buffy and love for Buffy in general. Whatever comparisons newer BtVS-lite shows get, I don't think those shows will ever leave the same kind of impact.

P.S. The comic books are not mentioned once in this appreciation of the character.

As it should be *firm nod*

Hmph. My EW still comes on Friday.

I was so pleased to see her at #3! Buffy fans feel like such a tiny cult next to something like Harry Potter, but I think she has had a big impact on pop culture.

As it should be *firm nod*

Indeed.

Really? That's so odd. I'd thought they'd all changed. It only recently happened, like maybe a little over a month ago? Maybe we're the test area :)

Thanks to a change in my work schedule this week, I actually spent all day yesterday thinking that it was Friday, and was annoyed when my EW wasn't in the mail...until I remembered that it was only Thursday. Heh.

Because there is no Buffy character there that we appreciate? Just someone named Buffy after our Slayer?

Agreed! But since Joss was the one writing the appreciation, I wouldn't have been surprised to see him slip in a comment about how her adventures continue in comic book form or something. But thankfully, he didn't.

Hey, I think Joss said it all when he admitted he'd toss the comics with no regrets if he got to work with the actors again. Hee.

Even with the randomness of some choices, the list made me happy. My girl at #3. Mulder/Scully at #12. No Veronica Mars (yes, I still carry my irrational dislike). And Edward Cullen making the list to ensure people have something to bitch about. Good times.

Nice Lisa the Vampire Slayer icon!

I cling to this as proof that the comics just don't mean that much to Joss.

The only truly WTF choice in my opinion was Rachel Green at #6. If they had chosen the whole Friends cast, that would have been understandable, but the only reason to choose only Rachel is because of Jennifer Anniston's celebrity. Personally, I thought she was the most boring character of the group.

Oh, it makes me so happy that Joss said that. It's nice to see him really appreciative of SMG at this stage, when things seemed cooler between them during/after s7.

I know! I was a little surprised but very pleased to see that he spent the last couple of sentences of the piece praising SMG. She brought so much to the role, it's nice to see his recognition of that.

Three cheers for our girl! Number three never felt so good!

P.S. The comic books are not mentioned once in this appreciation of the character.

Y'know, I just wrote a comment on a post by probablecylon about how comics Buffy cannot be considered canonically Buffy because comics Buffy lacks Sarah Michelle Gellar's interpretation of Buffy - and to see other people (JOSS! YOU DID GOOD TODAY!) recognize how much SMG brought to the character (that is lacking in the character's comic book interpretation) just makes my day.

I am a strong believer in the idea that the comic books aren't canon. Joss himself said at the Buffy 10th anniversery at Paleyfest that if he were working with the cast again he would throw out the comic book plot and start from scratch. So if they don't mean anything to him, why should they mean anything to me?
