Presently, i'm reading L'amant de Marguerite Duras, which is a good and a hard novel to read. In fact, i strongly recommend it. If you'd like to know why i'm saying this, you'll need to check the plot of the book, which i'm not going to explain here because i'm running out of time to do it. (Ok, i'll say something: It's far away from being a ( Read more... )

You need to have an advanced level in French language if you'd like to read it in French and at the same time to enjoy the reading because It's not an easy book to practise your French skills. Even if you're somewhat fluent, there's a lot of stylistic complications. I'd like to check Spanish and English translations of the book just to see how a translator can manage the polyphony issue.

I usually have more book recs, though all mine are in English (as I'm quite rusty in French & know only a little bit of Spanish) However, I read "The Book Thief" a little while ago, which was one of the best books I've read in a long long time - it's about a young girl in Nazi Germany during WWII. Sad book, but excellent.

Do you have a dictionary at hand when you read these kinds of things in French?

Personally, I've no idea where to start with my language-learning. I'd say I am at a beginner level, personally (although I have been classed before at Lower-Intermediate) and it's just so hard to think of where to start. So, I don't really study formally! I just learn via media mostly. Currently in the process of working out a study plan though, as I have more of a goal now!

Dictionary is my best friend, dear! In French, Spanish or English. I'm always reading something about some words or any new expression that i could use later ^^

French is a hard language to learn because there's a huge ammount of rules, you know? Writing and oral rules. Every single detail is important in French.

If you'd like to read something in French to make an improvement, i'll say that Maupassant's books, like Boule de suif et des nouvelles, peut-être, vont t'aider. That's a good way to learn some vocabulary because he has a huge description skill!
