Noticed this during a study hall period:

Greater Dodo: *looking in an atlas* Wait a minute, Egypt is in Africa?
Lesser Dodo: Wow, I thought it was in Russia or something.
Greater Dodo: I thought it was in Europe!
Lesser Dodo: What made you think that?

Greater Dodo: Well, they both start with "E", right?

I've heard stories like this before. =/ People are surprised Egypt's in Africa because well, it doesn't seem like it belongs there (to them). Some people tend to associate Africa with slaves, tribes, etc etc, not great empires like Egypt was back in the day. If you ask the same people where they thought Egypt was, they usually have no idea. They just assumed it was some weird separate entity.

Mm. Even better is the people who refuse to believe a placed named "Egypt" still exists.

Back in, what . . . ninth grade, our Geography teacher would have us take weekly Current Events quizzes, and each one would have a "Who's the current president/prime minister/dictator of _____?"-type question.

One week she decided to put Egypt as one such question, and half the class flipped their lids. D:

yeah. I can understand people not getting the Upper/Lower Egypt thing and the way it goes against the way one would assume, but to not know where the country is in the world is just not acceptable for anyone over, oh, 12.

I remember learning about nothing but Egypt in all of 6th grade. We probably learned other stuff, but all I can remember is Egypt. Maps, gods, hieroglyphics, essays on mummies and papyrus and pyramids.

No wait, I think there might have been some math in there too. It's hard to remember with all that Egypt going on.
