Gweneth Paltrow Coloring Tutorial

Jun 16, 2007 01:10

I figured out this coloring while making an icon for a challenge and I thought I would share. It works well with redy/orangy pictures.

going from
to

TRANSLATABLE: No, sorry, using selective coloring.

LEVEL: easy - medium

SOFTWARE: PS7 but should be translatable for other versions

1.) Duplicate your base and set it to screen, opacity 50%

2.) Create a new selective colors layer. Set it as such:
REDS: 0 0 0 -12
YELLOWS:0 0 0 -14
NEUTRALS: 43 0 -13 -15

3.) Create a new hue/saturation layer setting the master saturation to 29

4.) Create a new color balance layer. Put in the colowing settings:
SHADOWS: -37 0 40
MIDTONES: -18 0 13

5.) Merge/flatten your layers

6.) I thought the image was a tad bit dark so i duplicated the base and set it to screen 16%

AT THIS POINT YOUR IMAGE SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS:

This can be a stopping point if you are satisfied with the coloring.

7.) Take this gradient
made by moonstonecicons and set as a new layer at soft light 48%

8.) Then take this gradient
also made by moonstonecicons and set as a new layer at screen 53%

9.) Create a new layer and fill it with #dbdbdb and set to color burn 100%

10.) Duplicate the color burn base except change the opacity to 54%

11.) To me the top of her head and face were too light compared with the rest of the picture so I created a new layer and used the paintbrush tool with the color #dbdbdb and filled in her face and head and set it to color burn 100% like so:

I then duplicated the layer and changed the opacity from 100 to 37%. So there should be TWO paintbrush layers set to color burn.

12.) Merge/Flatten all layers

13.) The image still looked a little blurry to me so I created an unsharp mask by going to filters>>sharpen>>unsharp mask and use these settings:

AMOUNT: 60%
RADIUS: 0.4px
THRESHOLD: 0

14.) Merge all of your layers and then you're done! If the image looks too red to you play with the red levels in the selective coloring.

I hope yall understood that. I love getting comments!
