It is the time of the Great Panic. Even the United States can no longer build up the plague as simply another epidemic - SARS, ebola - and they cannot not deny that Phalanx, the supposed 'rabies' vaccine, is useless against the Solanum virus. The plague has already spread through India and China like wildfire, and the whole of Africa is about to

The wizardly response to the zombie threat began shortly before most of the world's governments, but not enough earlier that they were able to turn the tide. Earth's Planetary wizard put in place a planetary quarantine the second the extent of the plague became clear, which means that Earth's wizards have been on their own. And their numbers, just like everyone else's have dwindled.
Nita mostly does small-scale clean-up these days, working her way through neighborhoods and towns that were abandoned and overrun by the zombie hordes. Her talent for working with living things turned out to apply just as well to disposing of undead ones. It's lonely sometimes, but at least she's helping.
It's past time to restock her supplies, so she's headed for the nearest still-populated town.

"Wow. Not bad at all."

"We're getting by all right. The grocery store is a crap shoot--couldn't spare a generator for their coolers and then the last of the produce went tits up--but this place is like the little convenience store that could."

No innuendo there. Nope.
"Trade's always good. We don't have any major projects going on, but an extra pair of hands doesn't hurt either. Got any skills?"
This time there really is no innuendo. You never know when somebody's crazy ass hobby is going to save your life these days.

"Lots of skills. I'm good at first aid, good at getting rid of zombies . . . I'm not that good at handiwork, but I can hit things with a hammer without hurting anyone."

I...may have been banned from ever touching the toolbox again, barring zombie-related emergency."
It's a funny story, really. And no one's fingers were actually broken!

"So do you have repairs that need to get done?"

"If you're up for it, my replacement should be here--" She checks her watch. "--pretty soon. I can show you the damage; you decide if you want to take a crack at it?"

"We're not exactly trying to impress the home owners association, but we're not going to chain you to the ladder either. You take a look at it; if you don't want roof duty, I'm sure there's something else around her that needs work.
Hell, there's always dish duty."

Josiah has his reasons for being antisocial these days. "Safety in numbers" is for other people. He's safer away from anyone who might get trigger-happy if he gets bit, because who's going to listen to someone who says, "No, I'll be okay, really"? Everyone says that. As far as Josiah can tell, though, he's the only one who can claim it as true.
Humans are naturally social creatures, though, and Josiah gets lonely like anyone else. So, instead of falling back when he turns the corner and sees the young woman ahead of him, he considers for a moment and then picks up speed to catch up.
She doesn't exactly look like an Amazon, after all. If it came down to it, he'd probably have a chance of taking her down.
He doesn't call out, because the sound might travel too far, but he makes a point of making his footsteps audibly fast. Definitely not zombie footsteps.

The sound of rapid footfalls on the pavement behind her puts Nita on the alert instantly. Zombies are hardly the only danger out here: between panicky people defending themselves and good old-fashioned muggers, potential ways to get killed are all over the place.
She swings her pack off her back -- with the straps held in one hand, it'll do for a bludgeon if necessary -- and turns quickly.

"Hi," he calls, close enough now that he thinks he can risk it.

She's not visibly armed, aside from the backpack.
