the wonders of lit crit

Dec 11, 2008 19:48

When researching for my "definition of field" paper (don't ask, it's yucky), I kept coming across these critical works about Harry Potter that were very critical indeed. Complaining about how literary phenomenons ruin the greatness of literature and that it's not kids, but crazy adults, who actually like the series (I know a few thousand kids who ( Read more... )

Maybe it's just me disliking love stories, then, especially the really mushy ones like Twilight. Being romantic was never one of my strong points... :/

So the other three are just her trying to make more money? It's sad when that's so obvious. :(

AMEN. Except you don't go to high school where girls squeal over twilight over lunch, wear jacob and edward shirts, and have giant posters decorating their locker. I generally think "Lestat could totally kick Edward's sparkly ass so STFU."

LOL! He so could - Edward is a pansy next to rock-star Lestat. ^_^

It's not much better in uni, the books are less known and more laughed at, but the people who do read them get just as hooked. I'm still trying to understand how people can recognize their crappiness, yet still be addicted. :/

Yeah, for sure. At least Darcy and other characters like that have flaws!

That is so well put and so depressingly true. The 'Twilight comparisons' are ridiculous and I think almost insulting. I would never want to be compared to Stephanie Meyer.

It would be the greatest insult of all with her aparent "write more books to make more money" principle. It's pretty depressing to go to the bookstores and see all the people buying those books. :S

Ha ha... You have no idea how much Twilight annoyed me. Even so, for some strange reason (I think it may have been curiosity) I couldn't stop reading the series. And yes, I bought all four books and read them all within a week.

Pathetic, aren't I.

Oh dear, haha! Curious to know what happens next, that's not a bad thing at all. I think that's how I was with HP by the end, just wanting to know how it would all end. ;) It's not pathetic at all.

I guess I didn't hate Twilight as much as you did. Actually, I thought it was pretty good, but it's not something I'll rush to reread. The characters are pretty flat, though Carlyle is interesting to me, but the others were just OK. I'm a much bigger fan of HBO's True Blood, where you have characters of depth and complexity--Bill Compton is extremely interesting to me, as are Sookie and Sam. But Twilight is nothing to HP or Tolkien or Lewis. Not even close. Good pop fiction, but that's about it.

I'll take Severus Snape any day!!!

*hides* I'm probably too much against it, but it's really not my kind of story at all, which explains my strong dislike. I've read too much literary stuff to get into a vampire romance. :P

Snape is much much better. ^_^
