Did you know there is a real St Mary's in Illchester Maryland where a priest killed a group of young girls?
Check out all the facts, trivia, and pop culture references for
4.22 Lucifer Rising at the Supernatural Wiki.
Now the one reason I love this Show is that they chuck in so many references from pop culture to just...well culture. It suits my magpie mind perfectly.
my knowledge of art mainly comes from walking off hangovers in galleries, so please feel free to correct me.
When Dean first enters the 'green room', the paintings on the wall are bright, pastoral scenes. 18/19th century maybe? IDK. The stuff where they stuck greek temples in the back of English countryside scenes.
But later when Dean confronts Zachariah, they are dark surreal scenes of Hell by Hieronymous Bosch.
When Zachariah tells Dean his destiny is to kill Lucifer, they he stand in front of a painting of the Archangel Michael killing Lucifer. The painting is Saint Michel terrassant le Dragon by 15th century Flemish painter Josse Lieferinxe.
Michael is an archangel in Jewish, Christian and Islamic tradition. He is most known as a leader of the armies of God against Lucifer. look him up on Wikipedia. Theres lots of stuff. But the cool thing is of course he's appeared in Supernatural before - in Houses of the Holy.
In HotH Sam notices a similar painting of Michael killing Lucifer in the Church they visit. This version is by the renaissance painter Raphal.
(screencaps of these paintings as they appear in the show can be found on the episode entries on the Wiki)
Father Reynolds: That's right. The archangel Michael, with the flaming sword. The fighter of demons, holy force against evil."
Sam:Father Reynolds: Well, I like to think of them as more loving than wrathful; but yes, a lot of Scripture paints angels as God's warriors.
"An angel of the Lord appeared to them, the glory of the Lord shone down upon them, and they were terrified." Luke. Two nine.
two things: I remember at the time lots of people speculated on Dean being represented byt he archangel Michael. GO YOU! Also I love that this was written back when Kripke wasn't planning on having angels in the show - but obviously there's an opinion here about what sort of beings they are. This episode incidentally written by Sera Gamble.
Most of all i think this intersection of images, is a demonstration of how elegantly Kripke has handled the mytharc. While he obviously had some key points of it in mind from the start, if you listen to the commentary on 4.03 you'll know a lot of it has evolved along the way. It's a bit like doing onehanded macrame while you're drunk. We've all seen shows where the mytharc grows into a huge unmanageable thing, or just loses internal coherency.
I just love the way he cuts of the ragged edges and things fold back on themselves - like Azazel's role in Lucifer's rising. Given the process of writing a TV show over four years, I think this is a great achievement. And not only in the writing, but all the details through to the set decorating. Umm stopping babbling now. I think you know i like the Show.
