The opening scene of 4.20: one cap, one comment

i promise to bore you with lengthy meta soon - following on from the popularity of my meta "John Winchester: Dead beat dad and man whore", I will probably be writing either "The truth about Sam Winchester: Morally Corrupt Bastard (and not really that tall)" or "Is Dean Just A Castrated Coward with a Wonky Eye and Stinky Socks?" Stay tuned

A striking image to open the episode. Dean peaceful, fishing . It says a lot and i think has two distinct ways it can be read. One is that this is what Dean dreams of. I think it's notable that Dean can actually have a peaceful dream, can find a tranquil place within himself and also that, in it, he is alone.

The meaning that jumped out for me is that that this dream represents where Dean is at present - he has "Gone Fishin'" It's a symbolic representation of his desire to withdraw - from hunting, from life and from Sam. It's just all too hard. Of course fishing is a form of hunting, and maybe part of this dream is about his desire for a return to the time when hunting was something that gave him pleasure

The final scene of the episode of course could be seen as the dream playing out. Because fishing is about the relationship between hunter and prey, and that's where we end up with Dean having caught Sam.
