the muppet at the end of this book

So - The Monster at the End of This Book: Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover.
Firstly is obviously a shoutout to me and my SPN Muppet porn, which I believe was ina scene cut from the episode where Chuck was played by Grover, Sam and Dean by Bert and Ernie and Castiel by Elmo.

In the book features Grover trying to stop the reader from reaching the end of the book, where he knows there is a monster. Finally the monster at the end of the book is Grover himself. And he's not as scary as feared. This, I think, is hopeful for Sam.

Chuck: I know it's a terrible burden, and you let it all rest on your shoulders.
Sam: Does it? All rest on my shoulders?
Chuck:That seems to be where the story's headed.

An interesting parallel to the conversation Castiel had with Dean about the weight on his shoulders. Again, Show seems to be implying...if only they could share it, but we had reinforced even more this episode how estranged they really are.

I am fascinated how they are playing out the free will/destiny themes. As with everything in SPN it seems not to be either one or the other but both. While everything here seems to be set up to show the inevitability of things, ultimately things happen that Chuck didn't dream (that god didn't ordain). Critically due here to Castiel's transgression in helping Dean.

But back to Sam and I think this episode revealed how he is falling. Not darkside per se as dean, and we, have feared, but on the road to good intentions. getting addicted to finally being in control, and having power. You can see at the end that he's losing sight of the why about killing Lilith - revenge fro dean, stopping the apocalypse. Sam know wants to win. He wants to be the one Lilith is scared of.

And that scares me.

Episode Entry for 4.18 now up at the Supernatural Wiki
