Why Bugs is the best episode ever.

Jul 31, 2007 00:51

At Comic Con, the Supernatural Panel were asked for their favourite episode, so I thought I’d share mine.

Bugs.

(waits for laughter to subside)

Please join me in a picspam meta on Bugs and then comment or post about your most-loved episode.  It'll helps pass the time until October.

A hint for writing metas. Look to the title. Bugs. This episode is about brothers’ bugging each other. (watch out for falling anvils around here).

It’s easy from our position of devoted brotherly love at the end of Season Two to forget what things were like back in the day. These guys don’t know each other as well as they used to (or think they used to) and they haven’t yet got to know each other as the people they are now.

There is unresolved shit - and it’s about to hit the fan. Bugs directly precedes the confrontation of Asylum and the break-up of Scarecrow.

But let’s get to the pretty pics. (caps from
leggyslove  with a bit of doctoring from me)

Dean has cash. Dean is happy. Dean can buy a cute boy.

Oh hai! Look a cute boy! Sam is sprawled on the hood of the Impala. Let me say that again. Sam is sprawled on the hood of the Impala. *takes a moment*

Kripke made the point at Comic Con - it’s Dean’s car. So Sam sprawling here is provocative - in all senses of the word *g*. He’s being a bratty little brother, but more seriously, he’s challenging Dean’s position of “older brother in charge”.

Sam wouldn’t lounge on the Impala now. One, because he knows it would piss Dean off, and secondly, these days he would crush the Impala like an aluminium can!

But Dean wants Sam to stay. and keep having sex with him. So he lets Sam sprawl on the car. And he lets him drive. Given that Sam didn’t drive at all in S2, we can see what a big gesture this was from Dean.

This shot pwns me. Kim Manners directing - what can I say! Well - a lot.  But there's another meta coming on that.  We are so lucky to have Kim  overseeing the direction of this show. And looking after our boys.

“We accept homeowners of any race, religion, color, or…sexual orientation.”

First official gay joke. Followed by Dean calling Sam honey and smacking  him on the ass.

Oh boys. Also? Free BBQ makes Dean very happy. The first real mention fo Dean’s love of food. And Sam’s ass.

Dean: Dad never treated us like that.
Sam: Well, Dad never treated you like that. You were perfect. He was all over my case. You don’t remember?
Dean: Well, maybe he had to raise his voice, but sometimes, you were out of line.
Yeah - not so much happy family memories.

Dean likes steam showers.  And you just know he has a deep moisturising treatment on his hair. Please can we see Dean enjoy steam showers more often?

The boys with umbrellas. I like ordinary things like this. It’s also sort of hot.  Also, I’m kinda weird.

Sam’s lightbulb moment - from pissy!Sam to a WTF!Sam in 2.7 seconds.
I won’t transcribe this speech, coz dudes? Watch the episode. It’s heartbreaking - Sam and Dean’s different views of their family and their place in it. Sam finally getting that John was proud of him, and scared for him. And that he checked up on him at Stanford.

The final lines:
Sam: Why didn’t you tell me any of that?
Dean: Well, it’s a two-way street, dude. You could’ve picked up the phone.

…just reminds you how broken this relationship was. *sniffle*

The Scene that launched The Bee Story. ‘nuff said.

And the boys defeat evil bugs by ...waiting for the sun to rise. Which it does  - very very quickly.

And that’s Bugs. A much under-rated episode but one of my favourites.

But then again - they all are.
