Don’t Be a Dream
It was 2 AM. Wednesday morning. Yunho laid back on his bed staring at the ceiling having completed another day of tedium. He was bored. Life in Seoul was not what he had envisaged.
His thoughts turned to the writers awards dinner at ‘The Mirotic' hotel next Friday. He hoped to do well. Yunho was famous for his very active imagination and his uncanny ability to put them into words. He had been asked to bring a partner and struggled to think of the right woman or man to take. He wanted a man or woman he would be proud to have beside him, smart, honest, and intelligent.
His thoughts turned back to Gwangju and to a boy named Shim Changmin. Changmin was a wonderful friend who made him feel special and wanted. Yunho loved him dearly and felt desperately lonely without him. Changmin was one of the few men he knew who really understood him. Changmin was beautiful in his own way, however despite his feelings at that time for Changmin, Yunho could not give him the time and attention he really craved. As his fame grew they slowly drifted apart.
Before Yunho left for Seoul, Changmin had met someone else. Yunho hated himself for not being able to commit to Changmin when he had the chance and would gladly trade all his wealth to be with him again.
Suddenly Yunho sat up with some urgency. He grabbed his diary and looked for Changmin’s telephone number. ‘He'll be on the mobile' Yunho thought. When he was in Gwangju he always called Changmin on his mobile as Changmin made his way home from work.
Yunho nervously rang his number. There was a long silence as he waited for the connection, then it rang. It rang half a dozen times and as he was about to put the receiver down, he heard a voice.
“Hello?”
Yunho paused unable to reply.
“Hello, hello”
“Oh hello” Yunho spluttered. ‘Changmin?'
“Yes, who is this?”
“It's Yunho.”
“Yunho? Jung Yunho! Yah you! Where the hell are you?”
“I'm still in Seoul, it's great to hear your voice again.”
“I can't believe it's you, how are you Yun?”
“OK I suppose, how are you and Minho?”
“Oh, we split up a couple of months ago.”
Yunho's heart skipped a couple of beats
“Oh I'm so sorry,” He lied.
Yunho and Changmin talked and talked. After the conversation Yunho leaped into bed. All thoughts of sleep deserted him as he lay awake with his memories.
The next morning Yunho left for the airport.
It was Saturday morning, Changmin was woken with the thud of mail coming through the letterbox. Wearily he hauled himself from his bed and made his way towards the front door. There was a letter bearing the words ‘airmail.' He picked it up and saw the Seoul postmark. He eagerly opened it and read the letter.
Dear my smarty bestfriend, Shim Changmin,
It was wonderful to talk to you again, I really miss you. I am to attend a writers award dinner next Friday at The Mirotic and it will mean so much if you accompany me. I have enclosed an airline ticket and the flight arrives here at Seoul on Thursday evening at 12.00 PM our time. I will be at the airport whether you decide to come or not.
Love Your friend, Yunho.
Thursday had arrived. Yunho had bought a stunning black suit for Changmin and laid it on the. ‘Changmin will look great with this suit' he thought. Yunho hadn't slept much that night but his adrenaline kept him active the next day. He looked nervously at his watch. ‘Sixteen hours before I see him,' he said to himself. It was sixteen hours the last four times he looked at his watch.
The remainder of the day dragged on and on until at long last it was 9 PM. Yunho freshened up and left his apartment. He drove ten miles to the airport. The large moon rose above the horizon casting a cloak of silver light over a peaceful road. ‘Life couldn't be better’ he thought.
The airport was busy. Changmin's' flight was due in just over an hour in terminal thirteen.
He sat in the waiting area, laid back in his chair and waited.
“Flight Se1190 from Gwangju has arrived at terminal thirteen.” Came the announcement. That was Changmin's shuttle flight. Yunho stood up and anxiously looked for the passengers to alight. The twenty minutes it took for the passengers to appear seemed like an eternity. He watched what seemed like hundreds of people appear and his heart sank as the wave of people became no more than a trickle.
Then in the distance he saw a tall man. He looked familiar and as he approached came into clear focus. It was Changmin. Yunho unable to contain himself rushed forward to greet him. Changmin's immediate reaction was to hold open his arms to embrace him. At last they fell together. They held each other tight as not to allow the other means of escape.
“Changmin! I have missed you so much, you don't know how much I needed to hold you again! I can't believe this is happening to me.” He took Changmin by the hand and took him to baggage reclaim, picked up his cases and left.
They drove into the park and Yunho stopped at a particularly beautiful spot. They stood and marvelled at the moon as it lit up Changmin's' gorgeous face.
“I love you,” Yunho whispered.
“I love you too,” came the reply. Yunho had longed for those words for so long. The emotion was too much for him as testified by a tear falling from his eye. He told him about the forthcoming writers event.
“I will be so proud to take you, you will be the most awesome man there.”
Changmin disagreed. He didn't have the highest opinion of himself, however, Yunho thought he was just perfect . He faced Changmin, stroked his face and closed his eyes as their lips met. Yunho never forgot his gentle kisses and he was drifting into pure ecstasy when he felt a tap on his shoulder.
“Excuse me Mr., Can you lift your feet please?”
Yunho looked up to find a cleaning lady standing over him. The terminal was empty. He looked up at the clock. It was 1 AM. He remembered that Changmin had not turned up. His over active imagination had got the better of him again. He stood up and slowly left the airport.
He arrived back at the apartment, sat dejectedly on the bed and put his head in his hands. How could I possibly think He would come all this way to see me,' he thought. ‘What a bloody fool you are Jung Yunho.'
He looked at the bed, picked up the suit the he prepared for Changmin and feeling of it's emptiness, cried. His eyes were heavy, he desperately wanted to sleep. He closed his eyes.
Some time later Yunho's sleep was disturbed by a knocking sound. He looked at the glass front door and saw a silhouette of a man carrying two cases.
Yunho's heart beat faster as he made his way to the door. As he opened it, there stood Shim Changmin.
“My plane was delayed. And I missed my connection, so I got a taxi here. I'm sorry, I hope you don't mind Yun.” Changmin said.
Yunho looked confused as he took him gently by the hand and finally held him for the real time that night.
As they embraced, he softly whispered in Changmin’s ear “Please don't let it be a dream.”
