Courtesy of today's Telegraph, two bits of awesome:

1) ITV embarrassed by report of polar bear washed up on beachCloser inspection revealed that the polar bear was, in fact, a cow. The farm animal had been bleached white by sea water.

2) Mapping stereotypes: how various demographics sees Europe. Would that the maps were a bit larger so the fonts ( Read more... )

2) I'm pretty sure most of my fellow Americans can't sub-divide at all. It's all one big blob of "Europe" in their mind, except for maybe knowing that the "boot" is Italy, and then to the east it's Russia or used to be. That graphic gave the average American waaaaaay too much credit. Except for thinking that Brazil is in Europe. Yep, that seems about right.

1. Aw. It does sort of look like a polar bear! Heh. (But fact checking is good, yo. Especially when something is highly improbable.)

2. Gulf of ABBA, hahahaha!

The USA one is about 90% spot-on, but I can tell it wasn't written by an American because it doesn't call Germany "World War II".

Also, what American thinks of the U.K. as "Mummy"? It should read "Limeys" or "Bad Teeth".

Coming by this a week late, and agreed that an American didn't make this (and it would have been handy if the "Where I Live" map at the top had included an attribution for the POV). I did notice the "Open larger version" links to the side of each map, though the first one is still only marginally legible. The others get really big, though.
