Snippet Sunday + SHIELD spec + DVD Meme #2 (Electric Boogaloo)

May 20, 2013 00:19

First, grasshopr_molly does a meme where she posts six sentences from a WiP every Sunday and I love the idea so much I'm stealing it without shame. Although I asked first. So it's no so much stealing as shameless copying, which I am entirely okay with.

Ollie spent the day putting in appearances and trying to act as normal as possible, including one excruciating ( Read more... )

meme, snippet sunday, wishful thinking, talking about myself

Unless it's a 2014 fic Castiel is never “Cas” in his own head, no matter how much he may like the nickname.

YES. The in-my-head version of 2014!Cas even gets peeved when Chuck tries to call him Castiel. Plus it's a nice little detail to throw in if one's writing a chance-of-state fic: the moment he first thinks of himself as "Cas".

Have I mentioned how much I love Enochian? Love it. Love how strange and imposing and alien it sounds on the show, love any excuse to use it.

So I don't know if you know this, but the Enochian they use on the show is actually words from the conlang ("constructed language") that John Dee made up in like the 16th century. At least mostly--the writers must have made up bits for the fake exorcism in "99 Problems" because canonical Enochian does not have words for "breed" (or indeed any even roughly sexual act), "mouth", or "goat". :) In fact it only has a few hundred words in all, most of them about smiting, Godly magnificence, and similar stuff; it's not nearly complete enough to use on a day-to-day ( ... )

YES! I hadn't realized they were using (well, a version, anyway) of the medieval Enochian until I started poking around to see what the script looked like (I wanted to write out the Enochian in Outrun My Gun but didn't like how the transliterations looked. I even downloaded a font but couldn't get it to display reliably and finally just wrote around it.:)

I love the sound of it, very harsh and monosyllabic. It's one more way the SPN angels differ from the myths about them - you would expect angels to have a lilting language, something that sounded good to the ear, and instead it's this truly alien sound. And it sounds great during the chanting.

You were going to write it in the actual Enochian font? Because that would've been awesome! Sadly, the existing corpus doesn't have a word for "cold", so you would've been out of luck anyway.

So when you're looking at the words in their "raw" form, what you have to remember is that all the consonants have default vowels. You have the word BASLEDF, but it's pronounced "ba-si-le-da-fe"--no consonant clusters. Vowels are only written when they're their own syllable or not the default for their consonant. B's vowel is usually E, so you have to write the A, but S's vowel is I and thus doesn't need to be specified in this case. L's vowel is usually A, so the E is written; D and F get A and E respectively. It's wacky.

Now all I have to do is decide which of the four possible fake exorcisms in "99 Problems" is the one that means "You ( ... )
