and you wonder why i'm perpetually bitter and cynical

forgoing sleep for late night rage-blogging (i.e. normal life 2010 onwards). no wonder i'm failing uni. but i don't think i can go to sleep until i vent this out, so here goes:

so i’ve been avoiding the olympic games (even without all the uni work bogging me down i don’t think i would’ve followed it as avidly as i did during the beijing games) and i ( Read more... )

What happened to Shim A Lam was so terrible :( Maybe it's because Australia's not doing so well this time compared to the previous few Olympics, but the media coverage of the Olympics this year has been SO negative. I can't stand it because as crazy as it sounds, it's really putting me off the whole thing entirely. All the "news" articles just making stories out of any little sound bite or whatever and the insanely negative comments from opinionated armchair critics all over SMH who can't wait to crucify any and every athlete is really disheartening. I feel for the athletes having mics shoved in their faces with questions like "SO WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU DID WRONG? ARE YOU SHATTERED YOU DIDN'T GET GOLD? etc etc" FFS I'm sure they're absolutely ripping themselves to shreds with disappointment inside, is there really any need to harass them like this. Fuck I chuck a tantrum when I miss the bus by 2 minutes, but at least I know another one is coming in max 20 mins... these athletes have to wait another 4 years before they get another ( ... )

no worries i agree with pm everything you said! i can't remember who it was, but it was a brunette aussie swimmer who came second or something and she was so devastated when she got out of the pool but the reporter just kept. asking. her. questions. and she was trying so hard not to cry???

ugh it's like they forget that the olympics are meant for people who have above-average athleticism and every time something amazing happens they're so quick to point fingers or downgrade their achievements by finding faults wherever they can.

yeah that's actually another reason why i'm not watching it this year, because channel nine has such crappy coverage! like... instead of replaying all of australia's so called "achievement" moments via ~london gold~ you could just broadcast the other events that are on atm, p l s. (also nobody cares about rugby atm, why are you broadcasting that instead of the olympics why such terrible decision making????)

I couldn't agree more with the disappointment I'm feeling toward the olympics this year. The commentary used in many of the events almost seem derogatory towards any country within the sphere of Asia. Throughout the events that China for example, didn't dominate in in previous years, they would suspect them of doping or that they were intentionally losing or something. I mean ffs if someone does well in swimming and isn't American or Australian or any European country, can't they just see it for being an achievement of an individual rather than casting suspicious eyes just because of the country's prior history with doping (mind you lots of European countries and America did that too in the past). Sigh I swear I thought the olympics was a celebration or a competition to show off physical prowess rather than to degrade other countries. ><
whoops now I'm ranting =__=

rant away!! this is a rant-positive space hahaha it's good to get things off your chest (if i had bottled this up then i would've gone into a huge blown-up tirade when uni friends were discussing the olympics oops)

i definitely agree!! another thing i found a bit suss was that they made a lot of the events (that asia, and particularly china aced at) round robins instead of straight up eliminations (e.g. badminton) which i think was why that whole debacle with the four teams being sent home happened. because round robins are going to wear out their stamina and rock their chances of dominating the competition once again. :| everything's so dodgy u g h

(btwww sorry i couldn't come last night! i saw a few photos and you looked very, very beautiful and grown up :P two more days and you'll finally be out of the 1's and into the 2's!)

Oh mannnn, we're all fuck this shit, this yr's olympics is so fucked.

Should I mention how US's own commentators failed to acknowledge the achievements of Gabby during team gymnastics? Fucking racists still "subtly" oppressing the minorities.

I almost don't care if Aus win anything LOL Oh and James M, I'm sorry you talked yourself up and got no gold. Not really.

y e s :((((((( i didn't see that til the day after i made this entry but i've been raging heaps on gabby's behalf since then! youtubed her performance and she was just a++

super side-eye at nbc for deriding her achievements as "not that impressive" (obviously the appropriate response would be MOTHERFUCKER SHUT UP BEFORE I SHOVE THE POLE-VAULTING POLE SO FAR UP YOUR ASS IT'LL COME OUT OF YOUR THROAT)

pshhhht isn't australia still on 1 gold medal? we were.... 16th or something the last time the news reported. even new zealand has overtaken us in the medal tally and that doesn't usually happen right?

I can't find anything on youtube because IOC etc are so annoyingly stingy about it...

LOL I totally agree.

Btw, side-eyeing the person on fb being all Ryan Lochte ~swoon~ Oh ur stupid tweets, so funny, genius!

Yeah, girl power LOL. I'm hoping our women's bball team saves the day ...and mens hockey, womens... not too sure about gold. MattMitch is not at 100% but I hope he gets a gold :(
I LOLed when i saw GB and NZ beating us. lol GB was worried they wouldn't get any, look at them now!

i thought our bball team lost already? or is bball round robin instead of eliminations? some online newspapers (ninemsn? not too sure) had articles a few days ago along the lines of "Australia have yet to win a single ~individual~ gold medal. This is one of the worst things to happen to us in the sporting context" and i just... really didn't give a crap at all :|

come to think of it, i don't even know what we DID win gold for.

girl power indeed!! people have pointed out that despite bullshit claims of girls being "catty towards each other" female athletics have shown so much more camaraderie and support towards other female athletes than males do with each other.

lol omg i had no idea what you were talking about but then i just saw some of lochte's tweets and idk i'm laughing so hard rn
