It was Christmas Eve and Harry was late home, again. He expected Ginny to be angry. He expected her to perhaps not give him the surprise she had promised, though she never said it was contingent on him being home on time. He never expected her to not be home at all.
Upset or not, Ginny had always been there.
The bell rang and Harry ran to open it, already apologising through the door. Once it was open, he saw Draco Malfoy dressed in a thick gray cloak and holding a letter with a ribbon attaching it to his hand.
‘You’re not Ginny.’
‘No, I’m not.’ Draco waited a moment. ‘Are you going to invite me in? I believe I’m holding your break up letter.’
‘What?’ Harry grabbed it and pulled Draco, who was still attached to the letter, inside the house. ‘She’s breaking up with me?’
‘Ouch, careful.’
Harry untangled the ribbon while trying to touch Draco as little as possible. It always made him blush when they touched and he really never meant for that to happen.
‘It’s attached you know.’
‘Why did she attach it to you to begin with?’
‘Probably to indicate that I’m your surprise-it makes the most sense to me.’
Harry stopped opening the letter to look up at Draco. ‘Her breaking up with me is my surprise?’
‘I know I work with her, but I am not her assistant. I never deliver messages for her, and I’m not sure I want to be your surprise after your insinuating such.’
But Draco didn’t move to leave, so Harry took the empty threat as it was and finished opening the letter. There was no way Ginny would give Draco to him for Christmas. She couldn’t have known. He walked into the living room with Draco a few steps behind him and fell onto the couch as he read it. ‘You’d never agree to that.’
‘Harry.’ Draco took off his cloak and threw it down on the couch next to Harry.
Harry didn’t look up, but continued to read Ginny’s observations of what he’d hoped she’d never notice. He remembered moment after moment as she listed them back to him. When he visited her at work and couldn’t pay attention to what she was saying, because he was too busy staring at Draco. That he kept slipping and calling him Draco, before they’d all spent enough time together to warrant such a familiarity. That he had apparently-
‘Oh Merlin, I said his name during sex.’ Harry snapped his mouth shut and pretended to be reading as Draco came to stand in front of him.
‘Harry.’
He closed his eyes. ‘What?’
‘I’m here.’
‘I know; I’m sorry-’
‘No.’ Draco took the letter out of Harry’s hand and climbed into his lap. ‘I’m here. What does that tell you?’
Harry searched Draco’s eyes for the answer. ‘She drugged you?’
‘Really?’ Draco said, his tone patronising.
‘Well, you are sitting on my lap.’
Draco ground against him.
‘And you’re hard.’
‘Harry.’ Draco made a point of making eye contact and speaking slowly. ‘I’ve wanted you for a very long time. I feel that I’ve been patient enough, especially since Ginny told me about the calling out my name thing the day after it happened. If you do not kiss me in the next thirty seconds, I’m walking out the door.’
Harry leant in and could feel Draco hold his breath, and then pressed his forehead against Draco’s instead of kissing him.
‘What if I fuck this up?’
‘The only way you could fuck this up right now is by not kissing me.’
Harry swallowed and leaned in again until their lips brushed, and then farther until they pressed.
He’d never be able to repay her.
