Funny that Italy was mentioned- it's been 10 years since I lived there AND I had a similar experience.

While I was studying and not working- things like grocery trips and the like were not well received by the natives. Even though I spoke the language, it was "there's goes that German chic." (Because they refused to believe an American could speak Italian) Few wanted interaction or even an Ciao.
