Do it yourself Artsy Book jackets

Apr 02, 2010 22:05

One of my craft-loving friends introduced me to Book City Jackets, a group that sells fancy illustrated sheets of paper that you can fold yourself to fit your books. She bought two sets and gave me one cover as a present! It now holds my butt ugly horrendous copy of Howls Moving Castle :D

BUT why pay $15 plus shipping when you are artsy and crafty yourself? And have the materials too? To thank her, and to try it myself, I decided to make a simple one for her ugly 'movie edition' copy of Beloved.

not as nice as the pros, but its a start :)

I made it a bit too tight, so it needs a weight on top to keep it shut.. I need practice!

It's a perfect solution to the problem of cheap fail covers. Why does the name of the actors make this sell beter!? Or the cheap chicklit look???(For my older rant on the subject, read here. )

This post is also about the book itself, for which I have to thank the same friend twice more. She's like my private free library ánd recommender all in one.

Beloved, by Toni Morrison.

If want to try something heavier, but are not ready for James Joyce or Tolstoy yet, if you're curious about what a Pulitzer prize and Nobel prize winning author does, if you're into magical realism, if you know next to nothing about slavery history like me, or if you're just hungry for a challenging but rewarding read, try this book!! I was amazed about how deep and puzzling it is, but it is still a light and fast read. Sometimes I had the feeling I was reading poetry. Sometimes her language is so compact and weird, you have to go back and reread to get the meaning. Usually I hate this type of deciphering reading, but here it's fantastic. The chapters are short and beautifully condense, everything has impact and meaning.

The story is equal parts supernatural mystery, complex human relationships (especially after the traumas these characters have been through) and ex-slave world perspective. After reading the jacket I expected a very dark and miserable sad story, which it is, but you can marvel and gasp at all the horror without getting depressed yourself. The characters are too strong and enduring to let that happen, and I was stunned how something bizarre like this can end well.
